Bird Flu

Not wishing to be a scare mongerer, but hundreds of thousands of people will die.
Thankfully, the UK government are on top of the potential risk of any human-to-human mutation hitting our shores by promising a vaccine for all:

"Plans to purchase enough vaccine to cover every person in the UK in the event of a flu pandemic have been announced by the Department of Health.
Chief Medical Officer Sir Liam Donaldson said 120 million doses would be needed - two for everyone."
- BBC news.

We're the only nation on the planet to promise such a measure, and I applaud the fact that our government takes the possible threat seriously.

The thing is, they aren't looking at the bigger picture.
It could be a perfect opportunity to curb a few problems within society.

Withold treatment
People serving long prison sentences, the elderly, and long term unemployed shouldn't get it. Contraversial perhaps, but lets think about it.

Prison populations are bursting at the seams. Overcrowding is rife. Re-offending is commonplace. If a flu pandemic sweeps the nation, would it be so bad if these people died? Tax payers money would no longer have to be spent on keeping prisoners housed. It would free up space for more prisoners and we wouldn't have to think about new ways of keeping track of prisoners outside of jail.

Unemployment is at a record low, but there's still a hardcore element that just can't be bothered. A special task force should be set up now to scour lower class housing estates. "Dolers" and their spouse and children shouldn't get the vaccine.
The end result would be an almost immediate end to unemployment as suddenly everyone wanted to work.
If children in lower classes died, then it would be very sad indeed. I'm not saying they're all destined to fall pregnant at the age of 13 and repeat the cycle of their parents, but it's a high probablity. Eradicate the future problem at it's source so that future generations can reap the rewards is perfectly acceptable; it's no different to securing the future of our people by cutting greenhouse emmissions. Lower classes are breeding faster than the people with brains and it's a dangerous thing.
If a flu pandamic were to wipe out the majority of such people then future problems would cease to exist, primarily crime and benefit payouts.

The elderly contribute a great deal to society. Every country pub needs an old man in the corner, and their endless stories about the war and how things were better "in their day" is something we need.
The thing is, the pension crisis isn't going away. There's going to be an explosion of old people that will cripple the state with pension beneifits unless huge tax rises are placed upon the working younger citizens.
There will come a time when the elderly are no longer such a national treasure, as all they will have done is worked; war heros will cease to exist in a decades time.
If the flu vacinne is withheld from the elderly, a tremendous burden will have been lifted from the whole nation for generations to come.
As the deadly virus sweeps through the nation, the younger workers can rest easy knowing that their hard earned money won't be going straight into making sure old people aren't put up in special nursing homes with a never ending supply of nappies.
The balance of the aging population will be corrected.

Conclusions
An opportunity to cure the nation is presenting itself in the form of "natural" selection; the virus will sweep over the country like a deadly cloud taking lives along the way. The government has the power to protect the people that will best serve the interests of the country and it's people, and thus the whole world.

It might be fascist, but the future would have a much cleaner society with less wastage and filth.
